John Hughes for Town Council

john_headshot_webThey say you should meet people halfway. I say, you’ve got to meet people more than halfway. You’ve got to let people know that you’re actively pulling for them.

I believe in service to my community. During my 27 years in Rosendale, I have volunteered my time and energy in many ways, performing or working behind the scenes at benefit concerts for people in need, or just diving in with tools and skills to help out.

For the past year, I have served on the Rosendale Town Board. It has been a true honor for me to represent the people of Rosendale. During this past year, we have been busy:

  • Starting construction on the new POOL!
  • Addressing pressing Water & Sewer and other infrastructure needs.
  • Initiating the Finding Rosendale way-finding project for improved pedestrian and bicycling safety and access.
  • Administering critical New York Rising grants for storm recovery and resiliency.
  • Adopting the new Economic Enterprise law that allows us to revive under-utilized properties.
  • Actively working to foster the arts, festivals, outdoor recreation, and eco-tourism that define Rosendale.

Rosendale has been a one-of-a-kind town since its inception. Working together, we apply creative solutions to problems.  That is how I live, and how I serve.

We live in a community where we care for each other, and I don’t ever want to lose sight of that. Money is tight for many of us, but all of our lives are enriched when we help each other out. That is the kind of town we are, and the kind of town I want us to continue to be.

I will be a friendly, enthusiastic, and open-minded representative of the people. Here are my promises to you:

    • I will continue an attitude of welcoming and kind consideration to board meetings, and all town business.
    • I will be a caretaker for our natural bounty. Our beautiful surroundings enrich our quality of life, and also drive our local economy.
    • I will be a caretaker for our creative and cultural bounty. Our truly unique style is precious and rare, and we should respect and foster the creative resources of our town.
    • I will keep our town affordable for the long term. This is a must for me and my family. We plan to live in Rosendale for a long, long time, and I firmly believe that using care and creativity to provide a high quality of life for the youngest and oldest among us should be one of our biggest priorities.
    • I will help develop and oversee economic development that is smart, serves our needs, and does not degrade our land or our quality of life.
