Democratic candidates for all elected offices are chosen by a petition process, rather than a caucus as was done in Rosendale until 2021.
Any Democratic voter can run for office by submitting petition signatures to the Board of Elections. The process does not require any endorsement or approval from the Rosendale Democratic Committee.
To run for office, you must collect signatures from at least 5% of the Democratic voters in the district. Petitions must have a specific format, and signatures must be collected between specific dates. Sample petitions and other resources are available from the Ulster County Board of Elections.
If only one Democratic candidate submits valid petitions for a given office, that candidate will automatically be on the November general election ballot.
If multiple Democratic candidates submit valid petitions for the same office, a primary election will be held in June. The primary winner will be the official candidate on the November general election ballot.
If you are a non-Democrat seeking the Democratic line on the ballot, the process is more complicated. If you would like more information, please contact the Ulster County Board of Elections or the Rosendale Democratic Committee.
